Applying To Competitive Summer Programs

As your student looks ahead to the summer, they might be thinking about applying to summer programs in an area of interest. There are several types of programs: some will require them simply to sign up and pay, while others require applications. If this is the first time your student is encountering an application, here are some tips you can share with them.

  • Look into programs NOW. Some programs have deadlines as early as late January, and you don't want to miss a deadline. A deadline is a deadline, not a suggestion.
  • Read the application requirements carefully. Each program will have a different process. For example, some will require essays, while others may want recommendation letters. And others will ask for test scores, grades, or something equivalent.
  • Make a list of what you need to submit. Next to each item, create an action plan. List WHO you need to assist you, WHAT you need to do to get it done, and WHEN you need it sent in order to hit the deadline.
  • Start with items that require help from others. Start with things like recommendation letters, transcripts, test scores, and essays that will need editing. You need to give these people and organizations time to deliver. Remember: an emergency on your part doesn't mean an emergency for someone else.
  • Have someone else check your work. As you're completing applications and essays, have a trusted resource check your work.  Simple spelling and grammar corrections can make a huge difference.
  • Don't wait until the last minute to hit submit. If we've learned nothing else in the age of technology, it's this: if you wait until the last minute to submit your work, something will go wrong. Aim to send your application (and supporting materials) in at least one day in advance of the deadline.
