UT’s New CS+X Majors: The Future of AI Meets the Humanities at UT Austin

The University of Texas at Austin is introducing three new interdisciplinary majors that will launch in Fall 2026. These programs, known as CS+X, combine Computer Science with another field of study to prepare students for the expanding role of artificial intelligence across every aspect of society. Students will be able to pursue a degree in History and Computer Science, Linguistics and Computer Science, or Neuroscience and Computer Science. Housed in the College of Natural Sciences, each major offers a powerful combination of technical skills and domain-specific knowledge, equipping students to lead in an AI-driven future.

Why These Majors Matter

Artificial intelligence is not just transforming technology. It is also changing how we understand language, memory, decision-making, and culture. These majors were created to help students become the bridge between technical innovation and human insight.

  • History and CS students might become digital archivists, historical data analysts, or specialists in digital humanities.
  • Linguistics and CS students can pursue careers in natural language processing, speech recognition, and computational linguistics.
  • Neuroscience and CS students will be on the front lines of brain-computer interfaces and AI-driven neuroscience research.

In each case, students will graduate with tools to solve complex problems that require both technical fluency and domain-specific knowledge.

How to Apply

This application process is especially important for current seniors. The majors were approved after the Common App opened, so students must take a few extra steps to be considered.

  1. Select Computer Science and either History, Linguistics, or Neuroscience as your first or second choice major on the UT Austin application.
  2. Once one of those majors is selected, a new prompt will appear asking if you would like to be considered for the CS+X program. Be sure to answer yes.
  3. Submit your application through either ApplyTexas or the Common App.
  4. After submission, you will see a new short-answer question in MyStatus. This additional response is required for CS+X consideration and must be completed after the application is submitted.

These majors are for students who want to do more than code, ideal for those who think deeply, build intentionally, and care about using technology to make a meaningful impact.
