Conquering a Heavy Course Load: 6 Tips for Managing Tough Classes

Staying on top of a demanding high school course load is definitely challenging. Between heavy reading assignments, tests in multiple subjects looming at once, and hours of homework every night, you’ll want to build effective organization and time management skills to help you succeed while balancing the rest of your activities and social life.

Here are 6 tips to help you thrive while taking hard classes.

  1. Get Organized: Create a system that works for you, whether that means folders, a planner, a physical or digital calendar, and/or to-do lists to stay on top of assignments, tests, and project deadlines across all your classes.
  2. Schedule Study Sessions: Map out set days/times each week to get your homework and studying done for each class. Designate a regular study area where you can focus. If studying with others motivates you, put together a study group.
  3. Break Down Big Assignments: Break large projects into smaller, manageable tasks that you can complete in stages.
  4. Commit to Regular Daily Review: Scheduling just a small amount of review time every day, even 10 to 15 minutes per class, allows your brain to consolidate everything you’re learning. Use pockets of time during the day to flip through notes or flashcards for each subject. This technique is most effective when it’s consistent, so create a reminder on your calendar or to-do list app.
  5. Visit With Your Teacher: Attend any review sessions offered and be sure to see your teacher to ask questions and ensure you understand the material.
  6. Mind Your Wellbeing: Make sure to also schedule time for your mental health through exercise, socializing, or just relaxing. It’s critical to recharge to maintain your motivation and cement what you’ve learned.
