Getting a Jump Start on Competitive Summer Programs

It's never too early to start thinking about the upcoming summer and making some plans. As high school students, there are so many great opportunities that become available in the summer months. From college visits to internships, to volunteer trips and camps -- there is something for everyone!

Start by thinking about your ideal summer -- what would make it special or fun? What types of activities do you want to take part in? Do you want to learn a new skill, explore a specific topic or just have some fun?

Once you've identified your goals for the summer, start researching different programs and options that fit your interests. Ask your guidance counselor for advice or recommendations on potential programs. Make sure you read up on any competitive programs you might be interested in, as well as the application requirements for each.

Finally, once you have all the information, it's time to start putting together a plan. Make sure to factor in any academic or extracurricular commitments, then decide which programs and activities you would like to pursue. Don't forget to take into consideration potential costs or travel arrangements that may be necessary.

Many of these program have early deadlines and are often competitive. What makes a program competitive? There are a number of factors to account for, but the most competitive programs not only offer participants funding (and often financial aid), but also require students to demonstrate passion and curiosity for their chosen subject. Additionally, many selective programs offer high school or college credit upon their completion. A final consideration is program size, with smaller and more immersive programs only selecting a handful of students nationally each summer.

Here are 4 thrilling summer programs with applications that open early that interested students and their families should consider. Keep in mind that each of these programs require application materials, ranging from essays to letters of recommendation.
