College Spotlight: Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) Atlanta

Coolness and creativity infiltrates every square inch of the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) Atlanta campus. It’s hard to take it all in. From the colorful furniture installations in the Visitor Welcome Center to the vibrant art on every wall, student and alumni work is on display everywhere in the academic buildings and dorms. Quirkiness abounds. For instance, you’ll find spaceship-like napping pods in the cafeteria.

Students at SCAD Atlanta may stay there throughout their entire degree or go study at any of the school’s other locations in Savannah, Hong Kong, or Lacoste, France during any quarter (fall, winter, spring or summer). With 25% of students coming from abroad, students at SCAD (on all campuses) develop a broad, global network to help them develop and sustain their creative careers.

Parents will be happy to know that the ROI is there to back up the student journey at SCAD. A recent survey of graduates 10 months after graduation revealed that 92% were employed in creative industries. To ensure students are considering how to make a living from their creative pursuits, entrepreneurship and business skills are woven throughout each student’s curriculum. For example, all film students become AVID (the industry standard for film editing) certified, so they can be hired as editors right away. Artists are given opportunities to sell their work through the annual Open Studio event, which invites the public to come through the gallery and purchase student work. The November 2019 show sold $50,000 worth of student artwork.

All students take a communication course to be able to market their pieces  and also work with professors for how to price their work.  Entrepreneurship is available as a minor. And interdisciplinary majors such as Business of Beauty and Fragrance, and User Experience (UX) Design, a new major designed in collaboration with Google, give students cutting-edge opportunities to find their creative niche in the business world.
