Are Flagship Universities the New Ivies? Check Out 8 Great Alternatives Students Should Consider

Admission rates continue to drop at several top public universities, with many now as selective as elite private colleges. For example, UCLA and UC Berkeley now admit only around 10-15% of applicants. If highly competitive flagships seem out of reach for your student, take heart. There are still many excellent and more accessible public universities to consider. Broadening your college search beyond just the most selective schools can reveal wonderful alternatives well worth applying to.

Getting into top tier public institutions has become exceedingly challenging. To get a sense of just how competitive some of these schools have become, check out this list of admit rate trends over the last 3 years.

This doesn't mean your child won't have amazing college options. If highly selective flagships seem out of reach, many excellent public universities have less daunting admissions:

- University of Iowa - A major research institution and Big 10 member located in Iowa City.

- Arizona State University - A rapidly growing school with multiple campuses in the Phoenix metro area.

- University of Oregon - A scenic campus set in the Willamette Valley, strong in athletics.

- University of Kansas - Over 25,000 students in Lawrence, KS, big basketball presence.

- Iowa State University - Leading research university in Ames, IA, strong engineering programs.

- University of Massachusetts - Flagship campus of 29,000 students in Amherst, MA.

- University of Arizona - Major public research university in Tucson, AZ founded in 1885.

- University of Missouri - Flagship public university located in Columbia, MO.

With care, wisdom and perspective, you can help them navigate the process:

  • Recognize that surging applications, not your child's merit, are driving these low admission rates. Schools simply have limited seats. Denials happen to many qualified, worthy applicants.
  • Help your child apply broadly to balance safety, target and reach schools. This gives them the best shot at admission somewhere they'll thrive. No one can count on getting into just competitive colleges.
  • Assure your child that where they attend doesn't define their worth. Many paths can lead to a fulfilling life. College is just one step on the journey. Keep perspective, and don't let this process overwhelm you.
