Why Quality, Not Quantity, Matters for Your Teen's Extracurricular Activities in College Admissions

With the growth in college applications, extracurricular activities have become an even more important component of college admissions, but it's not about quantity. Colleges are looking for students who have a genuine commitment to their chosen activities. Encourage your teenager to find a core set of meaningful activities and devote time and energy to them, rather than spreading themselves too thin.

Admissions officers at highly selective colleges weigh a variety of factors when considering applicants, and any specific weight given to extracurriculars lacks credibility. While participating in extracurricular activities is important, having top grades in rigorous courses is even more critical.

In the past, students who participated in multiple extracurricular activities impressed admissions officers. However, today's colleges are looking for students who have a singular hook or area of expertise. It's better to have one strong extracurricular that showcases a student's passion and commitment, rather than a long list of shallow involvements.

On The Common Application, students are asked to list their ten most significant extracurricular activities. They have limited space to describe their positions, organizations, and activities, so it's important to be concise and specific. Some colleges allow students to upload a resume, but it should only be used if there are so many wonderful activities that they can't fit them all into the application.
