How Liberal Arts Colleges are Evolving to Meet the Demands of the Workforce

The liberal arts are a mainstay of what the college and university systems were initially built upon.  But due to a change in times and demands of the workforce, post-secondary education has had to shift to meet these needs.  This shift is predominately in the business and STEM arenas, causing many to think that these are the only fields that can provide stable and well-paying jobs.

Recent studies have shown that the pendulum has swung back to the necessity of liberal arts.  The critical thinking skills along with well-practiced written and verbal communications skills make students of the liberal arts prepared to take on nearly every post-graduate option.  Here, we’ve highlighted some ways colleges and universities are preparing their students for today’s workplace.

Career Advising at many colleges now begins in freshman year, encouraging internships and career exploration as soon as possible.  It also focuses on networking - connecting with people (often alumni) already in the workforce.

Some colleges, like Pitzer and the other Claremont colleges, have pooled their resources to allow students access to classes and events on each other’s campuses, along with niche programs and exchange programs abroad.

Oberlin College offers interdivisional minors, cutting off the “silo” effect that can sometimes happen between different academic departments.  To take it one step further, colleges like St. Mary’s in CA and IU/Purdue U in IN make a point of clearly writing out the soft skills and technical skills they teach in their class right on their syllabus.

Finally, colleges like University of Richmond have created their College for Professional and Continued Studies to help advance their undergraduates’ real-world experience and  also to assist those who already have a bachelor's degree.

Regardless of where you go, be confident that the skills you will obtain will prepare you for your future, you might just need to think about how to market yourself!
