4 Things To Consider In Accelerated Programs

Have you thought about your future and considered the fact that you might need to go to graduate school?  Maybe you would like a business degree but have a desire to get your MBA at some point as well.  Maybe you are planning a career in medicine and know that an additional 6 to 8 years are in your future after you graduate.

Colleges and universities across the country are making these goals more accessible through accelerated programs.  An accelerated degree (sometimes referred to as a 'fast track' degree) takes your average undergraduate degree course and condenses it down into a shorter time period.

Here’s what you need to know about accelerated programs to help you decide if one might be right for you.

  • Consider your educational goals.  Does your intended field require more than just a bachelor’s degree?  This might be a great reason to look into an accelerated degree program.
  • Consider the types of programs available. Most programs will be a “3+ __” degree program.  A great example is the 3+2 MBA program.  Where traditionally an MBA requires 4 years for your bachelors then 2 years for your master’s, this takes one year off of your learning time and saves a year of tuition.
  • Make sure you are definite about your major.  There is nothing wrong with being undecided!  Accelerated programs are for students who are 100% sure of their path.
  • Think about the level of academic demand expected.  Because of its nature an accelerated degree will demand time and effort far beyond a typical undergraduate degree.

While it is not for everyone, accelerated programs can be a great way for students to achieve their goals sooner and with less cost in the long run.  Ask your future colleges about their accelerated degree offerings to see what might fit your academic and career goals.
