Hailing from Augusta, GA, the home of the Masters golf tournament, Jamie Garner initially planned to major in computer science but completed his bachelor’s degree in literature at Augusta University after writing an essay on J.R.R. Tolkien lit his fire more than programming code. He received his master’s degree in English at the University of Georgia in 2014 and is currently a Ph.D. candidate and instructor at the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing. Jamie has nearly ten years of experience in one-on-one tutoring and is an award winning teacher, having most recently won UT’s Maxine Hairston Prize for Excellence in Teaching. In his free time, he is probably biking around Austin for vinyl records, cooking, and having unnecessarily strong opinions about popular culture. He has only played golf once; it went poorly.

Jamie joined the College MatchPoint team in August of 2016. “Teaching is the most exciting job I’ve ever had, whether it’s in front of a class or one-on-one, and I always leave essay coaching feeling intellectually invigorated. The personal essay genre can be a tough nut to crack initially, and the writing process can be so nebulous and frustrating, as it is, but I enjoy helping students through those sometimes exasperating moments and showing them that they have plenty of interesting things to say about themselves. Writing doesn’t have to be painful and dull; instead, it’s an opportunity for creative self-expression and reflection. As an essay coach, I relish helping students find what makes them unique and translate that into engaging and thoughtful writing.”
