Growing up in San Diego, CA instilled in Katie a love of beaches and sunshine. As an undergraduate at Stanford University, Katie took time basking in The Farm’s glorious sun while completing a Bachelor’s degree in English and an Undergraduate Honors Thesis about the intricate ways reading contributes to the development of teens’ identities. Katie continued on to the Stanford Graduate School of Education where she completed the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) and earned a Master’s degree in Education. Since graduation, she has been teaching middle and high school English around the country as she follows her husband, a dentist in the United States Air Force, to his various duty stations. She will earn a Certificate in College Counseling through the University of California, San Diego in the fall of 2018. In her years teaching, Katie has coached over 100 students in crafting effective undergraduate admissions essays.

As an English teacher, of course Katie is passionate about supporting students’ growth into successful readers and writers. “But I’m even more passionate about empowering students to realize who they are, what they care about, and who they want to become. This self-exploration is the work of writing a college essay, and I work hard to ensure the experience is one in which students discover something about themselves as writers and about themselves as human beings who will do good in the world.”
