Born and raised in central Massachusetts, Erica decided to escape the harsh winters for Austin’s balmy climate. Here she completed a bachelor’s degree in linguistics with a minor in Chinese at the University of Texas at Austin. As it turns out, four years in Austin and four years at the University were not sufficient, so Erica decided to stick around and pursue further education, starting first with a master’s degree in English in 2016. Currently, Erica is a Ph.D. candidate at UT and an instructor in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing where she teaches a class of her own design called the Rhetoric of Bicultural Identity. When not on campus, Erica likes to occupy her time with farm-to-table cooking, exploring Austin’s burgeoning culinary scene, and spending time enjoying the great outdoors.

“Learning is one of my greatest passions in life and I’ve found that teaching is one of the best ways to do that. By working one-on-one with students I get to know them on an individual basis and we are able to create a relationship of mutual understanding and to learn from one another. I’m also a big believer in self-exploration through writing, and I think the college essay genre is the perfect medium for students to really delve into figuring out who they are and who they are becoming as adults.”
